I went to college at U.N.C. Pembroke, majoring in Business Administration. I have been married for 31 years and have 2 amazing kids. My son graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone in Economics & Finance and my daughter is going to medical school at University of Pikeville - Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. October is upon us and it is time to get ready for ghosts, goblins, and superheroes!

Here are some Halloween Safety tips:

  • Dress children in brightly colored or light-colored costumes.

  • Use reflective tape, flashlights, or glow sticks for added visibility.

  • Make sure their costumes and shoes fit properly to prevent trips or falls.

  • Make sure their costumes and accessories are labeled "flame-resistant."

  • Make sure your porch and front yard are clear of any potential tripping hazards.

  • Always accompany young children around the neighborhood.

  • Tell older children to remain in a group and stay in communication with you.

  • Avoid homemade treats and inspect all candy before it's consumed.

  • Only go to well-lit homes.

  • Do not enter any homes or cars for treats.

  • Drive slowly and be on the lookout for trick-or-treaters, including those in dark clothing.

  • Exercise extra caution at crosswalks and intersections.

  • Don't text or look at your phone while you're driving.

  • Turn your headlights on earlier in the day.
